Boy meets girl, they fall in love, unbeckonest to them their parents are sworn enemies. Wait...It is not Romeo and Juliet, It is a hilarious romantic comedy hindi bollywood film starring the amazing pair of Dev Anand and Nutan as their love blooms while houses are being made...
‘Ek Ghar Banauga Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Duniya Basaunga Tere Ghar Ke Samne…’
A beautiful 1963 love saga with elements of comedy, humour and misconception, this is a simple and beloved tale of a man and a woman whose fathers are competitors. Set in the black and white era, people would often wonder why I like it so much, I like it for one simple word, it’s a delight. Starring the charming duo of Dev Anand and Nutan, this story as the name of the film suggests revolves around a house. This film was directed by Vijay Anand and Birendra Nag, written by Vijay Anand and produced by Navketan Films (Dev Anand’s production company).
Sulekha(played by Nutan), a modern Indian girl's father Seth Karamchand (played by Harindranath Chattopadhyay) gets the land after winning the bid against his competitor Lala Jagannath (played by Om Prakash). The prized land is actually next to the land of Lala Jagannath. Naturally both of them desire to build a better house than the other whence Nutan employees architect Rakesh (played by Dev Anand), who is the most sought out architect in the whole city having studied abroad. As the consultancy proceeds so does the relationship between them and love blooms. Unbeckonest this is Rakesh is actually the estranged son of Lala Jagannath and somehow his mother manages to bring both father and son together and solves their bad blood. Lala, too stenches his bond with son, also employees Rakesh as his architect and tells him about the mean family building their house next door. Sulekha’s family have also told Rakesh about the greedy man making house next doors and how their house should be better but Rakesh has no idea that they are talking about his family only.
He comes to know about this situation during a restaurant visit from where the comedy begins about how Rakesh tries to keep relationship between his father and his feelings for Sulekha a secret and in a way becoming a sandwich in the old men’s rivalry and his own love story. Will Love win after all?
Well like I said it’s a delight to watch this film because it is so good. It’s the perfect rom-com which I have been missing since current Bollywood and Netflix films aren’t original or good. The plot of these films isn’t original and they lack good acting and music. Speaking of music, I just have to tell you that this film’s soundtrack is amazing. You know in current times the film soundtrack has one or two good songs but whole soundtrack of this film is brilliant composed by the talented S.D Barman and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri.
The title track or the beautiful ‘Dil Ka Bhawar Kare Pukar’ showcasing love, amazing chemistry and the whole of Qutub Minar from the inside (which was fascinating to see since now the Minar is closed for visit ) or ‘Sun Le Tu Dil Ki Sada’ pleading everyone to listen to their heart, or ‘Tu Kahan Yeh Bata’ where lovers search for each other, are simply enchanting. In a world full of remixes, listening to beautiful original songs in the voice of Mohammad Rafi is a glorious feeling. This film also shares an important message that not everything is black or white, there is a grey matter too and following the heart and love will win after all!
This pandemic led to lot of time in hand which gave me this golden opportunity to view beloved black and white old Bollywood films and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I think it’s just the magic of the films of that golden era with amazing plots, talented actors and enchanting music brewed together with the simplicity which makes it a joy to watch. Do check this film out; I am sure you will enjoy it a lot.
